NEPA didn't just supply electricity. NEPA supplied trauma and character development whether you asked for it or not.
Growing up in Nigeria meant you learned certain survival skills very early: Charge your phone immediately light comes. Not later. Not soon. Immediately. Cook fast, bathe fast, and finish assignments like your life depended on it… because honestly, it did.
NEPA taught urgency.
Nobody talks about this part. But NEPA quietly created a generation of founders. Unintentionally.
NEPA Raised a Generation of Multitaskers
The moment light comes, we transform into efficient machines. We can:
- • Charge phone
- • Boil water
- • Cook rice
- • Download movie
- • Iron clothes
- • …all at once.
Because when NEPA blesses us with light, it's not a suggestion. It's a limited-time offer.
Then They Changed Their Name to PHCN
Ah yes. The great rebrand. In 2005 they transitioned from NEPA to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), thinking a new name would fix everything.
Nigerians just laughed.
You don't rebrand trauma.
You don't erase character development with a new logo.
Nigerians collectively looked at PHCN and said: "No."
Not your parents
Not your neighbors
Not even the PHCN staff themselves
Once you traumatize a nation this deeply, you don't get a rebrand. You get stuck with the nickname forever. Even now years after the reforms, the unbundling into generation companies, transmission, and the 11 DISCOs (electricity distribution companies), and the full privatization around 2013–2014 Nigerians still shout:
"UP NEPA!"
Not "Up PHCN." Not "Up Ikeja Electric" or "Up Eko Disco" or whatever your local DISCO is called today.
NEPA is forever. It's a cultural heritage at this point.
NEPA Taught Us How to Build Under Pressure
Most Nigerian startups weren't born in fancy co-working spaces with unlimited power and AC. They were built in:
- • Hot, sweaty rooms
- • Cafés running on noisy generators
- • Midnight coding sessions by torchlight or inverter
- • Low-battery situations where every percentage counts
- • Places where WiFi and power were literally fighting for supremacy
NEPA trained us for unstable environments.
NEPA Gave Us Hustle Mentality
When resources are scarce, you move differently. You learn:
- • Time management (because light won't wait)
- • Prioritization (what gets done before darkness returns?)
- • Resilience (darkness is temporary… right?)
- • Patience (the ultimate soft skill)
These are startup skills. Silicon Valley teaches them in expensive accelerators. NEPA taught us for free.
When light is unreliable, creativity becomes mandatory. You can't depend on comfort.
So you start thinking. You start adapting. You start building.
That's literally entrepreneurship.
Even "Becoming" Started With Surviving
Before you became a founder… Before you became a developer… Before you become whatever you're becoming… You survived NEPA.
You learned to study with torchlight.
You learned to code with generators humming in the background.
You learned to dream big even in literal darkness.
That's character formation.
Nigerian Builders Are Built Different
Put a Nigerian founder anywhere in the world and they'll adapt. Why? Because they already know how to operate without perfect conditions.
They don't wait for everything to be ready. They start anyway with whatever is available.
That mindset comes straight from growing up with NEPA.
NEPA Made Us Resourceful
We became walking contingency plans:
- • Candles
- • Rechargeable lamps
- • Power banks (always charged to 100%)
- • Inverters
- • Generators (big and small)
- • Solar panels (finally becoming mainstream)
We have backup plans for our backup plans.
NEPA made sure of that.
Final Thoughts
NEPA didn't just raise us. NEPA trained us. It taught patience. It taught planning. It taught radical acceptance of things beyond our control.
And when they tried to rename themselves PHCN (or whatever came after), Nigerians simply looked at the situation and said:
"You can change your name, but we know your character."
NEPA builds character.
Always has.
Always will.
